The bio
David Moscovich (it/its) is a Romanian-American flash-fiction writer, sound artist, and the editor and publisher of Louffa Press. It writes flash fiction and performs its texts both live and on the radio, and divides its time between New York City, where it lives in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and Portugal, with long-standing ties to Nebraska that surface throughout its later fiction.
Born in Boston to Romanian-Jewish immigrants who had fled anti-Semitism, Moscovich grew up between cultures and continents. It earned a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from Portland State University and an MFA in Fiction from New York University.
Moscovich is the author of four novels. Outside JEF these include LIFE+70[Redacted] (Lit Fest Press, 2016), the print version of an e-book that had retailed for US$249,999.99 before being illegally obtained in 2014; Blink If You Love Me (Adelaide Books, 2019), set in modern Portugal; and Manhattan Other (Adelaide Books, 2023), whose stories triangulate Nebraska, Mexico, Cuba, and New York City. Workday [CAPTCHA Poems] (BlazeVOX, 2025) lineates verbal CAPTCHAs from 2007 to 2009 across a nine-to-five workday, in a procedure Rae Armantrout has compared to OuLiPo. Since 2010 Moscovich has run Louffa Press, a Morningside and Harlem micropress that prints innovative flash fiction, short stories, and poetry as hand-printed letterpress chapbooks and artist books, with a stated commitment to expanding opportunities for women, writers of color, and LGBTQ+ writers.
JEF Books published Moscovich's first novel, You Are Make Very Important Bathtime (2013), a celebration of cultural misunderstanding set in Southern Japan. It won the 2011 Broad Set Collective Award for Flash Fiction and was nominated for an &Now Award and a Pushcart Prize.
Moscovich has received grants, sponsorships, and fellowships from PEN America, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, NYU, Teachers & Writers Collaborative, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and International House NYC. Alongside the press it is an active sound and performance artist and has performed with an amplified bicycle for several years.
