Extractions: Selected Poems is the career selection in verse, 369 pages drawn from the poems Tarnawsky considered his best-known and his favorites. JEF published it in September 2025, weeks before his death that October.

Poetry was where Tarnawsky began. His first collection, Life in the City, appeared in Ukrainian in 1956 and was received as a break with the language and the subject traditions of Ukrainian literature. He went on to help found the New York Group, the Ukrainian émigré avant-garde that carried modernist and postmodernist innovation into a literature Stalin had spent decades suppressing, and co-edited its exile almanac New Poems. Extractions spans that arc, work in both Ukrainian and English by a writer who was also an engineer and a linguist by training.

JEF issued it alongside his final fiction, the dilogy of Sebastian in a Dream and The Burial of the Count of Orgaz.
